Wisdom teeth typically emerge between ages 17–25, and often lack sufficient room in the jaw, causing them to become impacted (growing at an angle, stuck under the gum, or pushing against other teeth). This can lead to pain, swelling, gum inflammation, jaw stiffness, and decay in nearby teeth. Signs removal may be needed: swelling near the jaw, gum infection, bad breath, difficulty opening the mouth, pain when chewing, or shifting/crowding of other teeth. The procedure: Starts with a consultation, exam, and X-ray. Extraction is done under local anaesthetic (sedation optional), involving numbing, opening the gum if needed, removing the tooth, and cleaning/closing the site. Appointments take 30–60 minutes. Recovery: Takes a few days, with mild swelling/discomfort managed through rest, cold compresses, soft foods, avoiding smoking/straws, and salt water rinses.
